Understand the difference between spot value, the product premium and the final delivered cost.

Spot value is a reference, not a retail checkout price

Spot is a quoted reference for a quantity of metal in wholesale markets. A retail product introduces additional costs: fabrication, distribution, hedging, operating margin and sometimes collector demand. Comparing a dealer’s product listing with a spot chart is useful only when you match the fine metal weight and the quote’s timing.

The product premium

A bullion item’s simple premium is (quoted item price minus fine metal spot value) divided by fine metal spot value. A single one-ounce item priced at $3,150 against an illustrative $3,000 reference has a $150 premium, or 5%. This example is hypothetical—not a current gold price.

Your delivered premium can be higher

Shipping, insurance, payment-method differences and applicable taxes change the effective total. Make sure you do not count a credit-card charge twice if the merchant already shows a specific card price. At order confirmation, capture the exact item name, fineness, quantity, timestamp and method.

How to compare responsibly

Use the same product, metal content, payment method and destination. Avoid labeling one shop “cheapest” based on unrelated items or stale quotes. Also look at the dealer’s actual refund, cancellation and buyback policies; the lowest premium is only one part of the decision.

Physical metals may lose value, transaction premiums and spreads can be substantial, and this site does not provide individualized financial advice.
